Advocacy group Common Cause slammed The Washington Post for backing out of running a $115,000 "Fire Elon Musk" ad in Tuesday's paper.
The ad, paid for in collaboration with the Southern Poverty Law Center Action Fund, per The Hill, featured a picture of Musk laughing with a caption reading, "Who's running this country: Donald Trump or Elon Musk?"
"Since day one, Elon has created chaos and confusion and put our livelihoods at risk. And he is accountable to no one but himself," the ad reads further down the page. "The Constitution only allows for one president at a time. Call your senators and tell them it's time Donald Trump fire Elon Musk," then directed readers to FireMusk.org.
Certain newspaper editions, which were to be delivered to subscribers at the White House, the Pentagon and Congress, would have had "wrap ads" that run on the front and back of the newspaper, along with a standard full-page ad, according to The Hill.
The Post informed Common Cause on Friday that they wouldn't be running the ad and didn't offer an explanation.
"Is it because we're critical of what's happening with Elon Musk? Is it only OK to run things in the Post now that won't anger the president or won't have him calling Jeff Bezos asking why this was allowed?" Common Cause President Virginia Kase Solomón told The Hill. The Amazon founder bought the paper for $250 million in 2013.
A spokesperson for the Post declined to comment as the publication has a policy of not talking about internal decisions related to specific advertising campaigns.
