A man hunt is underway for a Nevada teen suspected in the murder of his mother and younger brother. Adrian Navarro-Canales is being listed as an adult in a warrant that accuses him of the murder of his mother Elvira Canales-Gomez and his nine-year-old brother, Cesar Navarro. The bodies of the woman and her son were discovered on Friday in the family's apartment. The Associated Press reports that both victims died of stab wounds to the chest. Police discovered the bodies after concerned coworkers reported that Elvira did not show up for work and her son's school reported the boy had not been in class.
When the investigation first got underway police believed that Adrian Navarro-Canales was another victim. It has been reported that new evidence in the case shifted Navarro-Canales' status from victim to suspect. A spokesman for the Henderson police department, Keith Paul told the Associated Press that the department is "doing everything possible to find him." Police have also said that the teen's passport and border documents were found in the apartment when the bodies of his mother and brother were removed.
The murders are believed to have occurred on Tuesday September 17, just one day after Navarro-Canales celebrated his 16th birthday with his family. The teen's father is living in California, but flew to Nevada and made a plea over the weekend for his son to return home. It took four visits to the family's apartment before the police went inside and discovered the bodies. Worried friends had been calling the police to get them to make sure the family was okay. Each time the police went to the home they said they found no reason to break in.
When police decided to open the apartment door when they visited a fourth time they say they were hit instantaneously with the smell of decomposing human flesh. The mother and son were found in the bathroom. The nine-year-old boy was stabbed once and the mother had multiple stab wounds and a knife in her chest.
