An abusive lesbian couple who reportedly tortured and murdered a 3-year-old boy in 2017 has each been sentenced to 22 years in prison.
Connie Marie Escamilla, 29, and Kylie Mykaela Ann Beasley, 25, both of whom pleaded guilty to a count each of second-degree murder and torture in the death of Escamilla's 3-year-old son Gilbert in 2017, have been sentenced to 22 years in prison, Law & Crime reported.
On March 1, 2017, authorities were called to the couple’s apartment in Modesto, Emerald Pointe apartments on the 300 block of Standiford Avenue after they were alerted about a child not breathing. When the officers reached the scene, they found Gilbert unresponsive and rushed him to Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for treatment. However, Gilbert succumbed to his injuries at the facility and died the next day.
The hospital staff reportedly discovered that the toddler had suffered extensive physical injuries including severe burn marks on his legs, bruising and abrasions over his entire body, as well as various fractures. The toddler was also diagnosed with internal damage consisting of bleeding on the brain, a bruised lung, and bruised liver.
When the officers questioned Escamilla and Beasley, they claimed that Gilbert got some of his injuries in a car accident. However, they gave different accounts of when the supposed accident happened. The authorities found no reports proving that such an incident had occurred, the Modesto Bee reported.
The couple added that the injuries were also caused by severe burns after hot water spilled on the child. However, doctors determined that could not have caused the injuries. They levied several other excuses, including claiming that the toddler had fallen off his bed and blaming an unknown male attacker for the child's injuries, an alleged suspect whom law enforcement was never able to locate.
In addition to these unwieldy claims, they also cried negligence by the medical professionals who administered CPR to the unresponsive child.
However, when the couple realized that Gilbert had died, both Escamilla and Beasley admitted to being untruthful and blamed each other for the child’s injuries and death. Following this, they were both arrested and charged with Gilbert’s murder.
On March 9, Escamilla and Beasley were sentenced by Judge Linda McFadden to serve 15 years to life for the murder charge, and an additional seven years for the torture count.
