An abducted woman in New York was saved on Wednesday from a tense hostage situation when she asked the food truck that she booked on the delivery app Grubhub to call the police using the notes feature in the app.
The Chipper Truck Cafe, which is based in Yonkers, New York, received an unusual Grubhub order note for an Irish breakfast sandwich and a cheeseburger that gave them pause when they first read it, according to Insider.
“Please call the police his going to call me when u delivered come with the cones please don't make it obvious,” the woman said on her “additional instructions” note on her order.
The food truck employees were confused and concerned by the additional instruction with the message, and they contacted owner Alice Bermejo’s husband to see what they should do regarding the message, CBS News reported.
“The message came in, and the girls read it and they called my husband to see what they should do,” Bermejo said. “He told them, let's call the police, we can't take any risk or chance.”
Officers were called to the woman’s house, and a five-hour hostage situation occurred that ended up in the arrest of the 32-year-old man holding the 24-year-old woman hostage, with the woman being brought to a nearby hospital after the ordeal had finished.
The restaurant was informed of the outcome of the situation the next day, with someone calling the Chipper Truck Cafe to thank their employees for their quick and decisive action to help the woman.
“We were really happy,” employee Alicia Berme said, before elaborating: “It's insane. You never think you're going to be the person to do that or that the situation is going to happen to you.”
“Extremely proud, extremely proud of them,” Bermejo said when asked how she felt about her employee’s actions. “Once we pack the bags and send it out, that's it. The fact that they saw that before they sent it out, they couldn't just left it as the driver's problem. But they didn't.”
The hostage-taker is being charged with rape, strangulation, unlawful imprisonment, and assault, among other charges. Grubhub, meanwhile, is offering a $5,000 investment to the Chipper Truck Cafe, “as a way of recognizing her and Alicia for their quick thinking.”
