A 9-year-old girl reportedly drowned to death at her grandmother's birthday party after her hair got caught in the pool drain, trapping her underwater in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil on Feb. 12.
On Feb. 12, youngster Mariana dos Anjos Faria and her family, from the neighboring municipality of Aquidauana, were reportedly celebrating their grandmother’s 75th birthday at a resort in the municipality of Dois Irmaos do Buriti, in the west-central Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, when the event took a tragic turn. During the celebration, Faria's hair reportedly got sucked in by the pool drain while was swimming at the resort. She subsequently died after being trapped underwater, New York Post reported.
Even though Faria's family tried to rescue her and quickly pulled her out of the swimming pool, she was fished out unresponsive and not breathing, much of her hair still stuck in the drain. Her father attempted life-saving measures at the edge of the swimming pool before medics rushed the toddler to a hospital for treatment. However, doctors were unable to revive her at the facility and she was declared dead upon arrival.
"It is with immense pain in our hearts that we receive the news that our dear student Mariana dos Anjos Faria, from the fifth year, has gone to heaven," Faria's school authorities wrote on social media.
The details regarding a police investigation are currently unknown. It also remains unclear how the young girl became trapped in the swimming pool without anyone noticing and how long she was stuck underwater before her body was retrieved, the Mirror reported.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 10-year-old girl also died reportedly after her hair got caught in her family's swimming pool drain in November 2021, the Sun reported.
