An 8-month-old baby was killed after a rear passenger door opened on a car when her mom made a left turn, dumping the baby in front of another car that ran over her.
The shocking incident happened about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14 at a busy intersection in Irving, Texas.
The infant’s mother was making a left turn when the rear passenger door opened and the infant fell out, police spokesman, Officer Robert Reeves said in a press conference.
The officer said the infant was killed when a vehicle either behind or next to the mother’s car ran over her.
Three other children, aged 6, 3, and 2, were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Reeves said none of the children were secured in a safety seat.
A witness told police that they initially thought a baby doll had fallen out of the vehicle but was shocked to realize it was a child. Reeves said the person immediately stopped and rushed to render aid, but the baby girl had died by then.
The vehicle that ran over the child did not stop, mostly because the driver might not have been aware they ran over the baby, Reeves said.
The police are now investigating to identify that driver. No criminal charges are expected against the driver since the investigators believe the person is unaware of the tragedy.
However, the infant’s mother could face charges, but none have been filed yet, as a further probe is underway, Reeves said.
The police are urging anyone with information about the incident or anyone who thinks they might have run over something at that time and place to report to the authorities.
Child Protective Services is also investigating the incident.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a four-year-old girl was killed and four children were injured after their drunk mother crashed a vehicle in the 4200 block of E. Sam Houston Parkway N., in Houston at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14.
The mother, 25-year-old Rosalia Sanchez, was returning home after a baby shower party when the vehicle crashed.
Sanchez’s vehicle collided with a traffic signal device and a concrete barrier wall before coming to a halt in the southbound service road near Woodforest, deputies said.
Five children, ranging in age between 2-years-old and 10-years-old, were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Sanchez was initially charged with driving while intoxicated with a child passenger and intoxication assault, however, her charges were upgraded to felony murder after her child was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Her bond was set at $75,000.
