A 7-year-old girl has been reported dead after a massive stone statue weighing some 440 pounds fell on top of her at a hotel in Munich, Germany on Friday, Aug. 26.
The unnamed 7-year-old girl, who hails from Italy, had reportedly come to Munich, Germany for a vacation with her parents. On Friday evening, Aug. 26, while the toddler was spending time in the courtyard of a hotel she was staying with her parents, a roughly 200-kilogram (440-pound) stone statue collapsed and fell on her.
Witnesses who saw the tragic incident immediately happen rushed in to save the girl. They managed to free the toddler from under the statue and called emergency services, ABC News reported.
The girl was immediately rushed to a hospital in Munich for treatment. However, she later succumbed to her injuries and died at the health facility. The reason behind why the statue toppled over wasn't immediately clear. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, CBS 17 reported.
In a similar but unrelated incident, an Israeli teen was killed after a part of a statue collapsed on him while he was doing pull-ups on it during his workout on Monday, May 24, 2021, Latin Times reported.
The deceased boy, identified as 15-year-old Karim Riada, a resident of the Druze town of Hurfeish, was reportedly doing pull-ups on a stone gate at Monfort Lake Park in the nearby city of Maalot-Tarshiha when the incident happened. While he was doing pull-ups, a piece of the statue collapsed and fell on top of him. Riada reportedly suffered critical injuries on his head and spine after the statue collapsed on him.
Medics immediately responded to the park and found him unresponsive on the ground. Following this, emergency services rushed him to Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, where he succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced dead.
"At this stage, we do not consider it appropriate to relate to the circumstances of the case and we will wait for the findings of the investigation and the initial probe that will be performed by law enforcement," the Ma’alot Tarshiha Municipality said.
"We are sorry for the outcome of the difficult incident and share in the deep sorrow of the youth’s family," they added.
