Six were killed in a bar shooting in Cancun, Mexico on Thursday after two gunmen opened fire inside a seaside tourist resort. Public Safety Secretary Jesus Aiza said two men armed with automatic weapons opened fire inside the resort's poolside bar, in the world-famous resort town located in the southeastern state of Quintana Roo.
The shooting is yet another outbreak of violence in the drug-ravaged country to America's south. Newly-elected Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto pledged to crackdown on outbreaks like this one and will continue cracking down on violent drug cartels like his predecessor, Felipe Calderón.
The six who were shot were not identified by authorities but there were reports they may have been members of the local taxicab union. The violence comes days before the region is expected to host tens of thousands of spring break vacationers. Many towns along the Gulf of Mexico see their temporary population shoot up as college students find respite from their studies in the tropical climate.
The suspects involved in the bar shooting are currently at large, and those who were injured in the shooting are under law enforcement protection at local hospitals. There has been no announced motive for the shootings.
