Apple is rumored to be exploring the possibility of releasing a 6-inch iPhone, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. The company has reportedly been testing multiple screen sizes for a future smartphone, ranging from 4.8 to 6 inches. All of which would be considerably larger than the current size display on the iPhone 5 which comes in at 4-inches according to sources. Although just an experiment with a larger screen the new smartphone would not be expected until later 2014.
"The electronics giant has begun evaluating a plan to offer iPhones with screens ranging from 4.8 inches to as high as six inches, people familiar with the matter say. That would be a sizable leap from the 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5 released last year, and, at the upper end, would be one of the largest on the market. But people familiar with the company's internal deliberations and plans indicate it appears more willing to move ahead than in years past. Component suppliers say Apple already began testing larger screens for iPhones in recent months. Apple has been particularly interested in recent tests for a 4.8-inch screen, these people say."
While it is standard practice for companies to test products that may never see the light of day, Apple is reportedly "more willing to move ahead" with the larger screens than it has in the past. This recent rumor supports previous reports that Apple was working on a 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch version of the iPhone.
All the details are still vague on the 6-inch iPhone but it is clear that Apple needs to revamp their design and offer something new for customers and fans. As competition from the Android platform continues to grow, more and more devices are hitting around the 6-inch range and utilizing the full screen feature. Samsung, Sony and LG have all announced larger smartphones this year and HTC is expected to do the same. Even Nokia is reportedly working on a Windows Phone phablet of its own.
Apple is expected to be separating their iPhones into low and high class phones this fall at their media event September 10. The company is expected to announce two new iPhones the iPhone 5S and 5C.
