A Washington state man is suspected of fatally shooting five people including his girlfriend late Sunday night. Police were alerted to a shooting in progress around 9:30 p.m. by an emergency call from the complex in Federal Way, Wash.

Police Chief Brian Wilson told a news conference Monday afternoon that the suspect, a tenant at the Pinewood Village apartment complex, killed his girlfriend Sunday night inside their apartment.

When officers arrived on the scene they could still hear gunfire. They also saw two men lying wounded in the parking lot -- one of them being the suspect. Police attempted to rescue the injured men, but the suspect reached for a gun and the officers opened fire, killing him. The second wounded man also died.

Police then found a third body in the parking lot, as well as two more inside the complex, a man and the suspect's girlfriend.

The police have not yet given out the names of the suspect or the victims, but were able to give characteristics of the victims and suspect. The suspect was a black male born in 1985 and his girlfriend was a white female born in 1988. They both lived in the Federal Way apartment.

The two victims found in the parking lot of the complex were a Hispanic male born in 1989 and a white male born in 1966. Both men lived in Federal Way. The last victim found in his apartment was a white male born in 1951, he also stayed in the apartment complex.

Officers also found two guns involved in the shootings: a .40-caliber Taurus semi-automatic pistol and a pistol grip Mossberg 500 pump shotgun with a 4-round saddle on the butt of the gun. The suspect had a valid concealed weapons permit and owned a .45-caliber handgun, according to Wilson.

The police chief said he hasn't seen a multiple homicide in Federal Way where there were so many victims. He commended the officers involved in the incident.

"I cannot be more proud of the officers who responded to this active shooter investigation," he said. "This is one of the most dangerous type of calls for officers to respond to."

The eight officers involved were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, Wilson said. All eight fired their weapons during the incident.
