A pair of armed thieves left 5 people dead during a bank robbery Monday afternoon in the Israeli city of Beersheba.
Reuters reports that the police surrounded the Bank Hapoalim and a violent outbreak of gunfire between the police and the thieves erupted in the street. A school close to the bank was forced to go on lockdown.
5 people were left dead in the bank robbery. Three people were bank employees and one was a customer. The police were able to catch one of the two gunmen. The second gunman was still hold up in the bank with a woman as a hostage.
The thief took his own life and the woman escaped without any physical injuries. After 5 people were left dead in the bank robbery the police commander for the region made a statement to Israel radio, the Daily Mail reports.
"Four people have been killed and the robber apparently shot himself dead. The scene is now clear," Commander Yoram Levy said.
Csmonitor.com says that the police are trying to determine if the botched robbery was in fact a robbery. Since the bank specializes in mortgages the police are looking into the possibility that one or both of the gunmen were experiencing financial hardships and decided to take out their frustrations in a violent manner.
