A 4-year-old girl has died after the driver accidentally left her locked in her sweltering school bus for several hours.
Flora Inez was trapped in her nursery school bus for more than seven hours as temperatures soared to 50C inside.
She had been picked up from her family home in the Hungarian village of Tomajmonostora on Tuesday, June 13, morning.
All the other children got out at the school and the driver locked the doors at 8.30am, but he allegedly failed to check if any child was left behind, reports said.
Inez cried for help and fought to get out as temperatures rose to 50C inside the vehicle, but sadly, no one came to help until 3pm .
She was unconscious but still alive when she was eventually found. The Hungarian National Ambulance Service said she was transported a in a life-threatening condition to the hospital by helicopter.
Inez remained in the intensive care and fought for her life for three days before tragically passing away.
"More than likely, her body became so hot that she dried up because she sweated and exhaled all the water from her body," Paediatrician Dr. Orsolya Ács told Hungarian outlet Bors.
"She was unable to correct the elevated body temperature, although the body always tries to cool itself in the beginning of similar cases."
The bus driver, who has been identified only as 56-year-old Istvan T, reportedly suffered a nervous breakdown and is now allegedly receiving psychological treatment at a facility in nearby Szolnok.
"My father was very worn out by what happened," the driver’s son, who has not been identified, previously told Bors.
"I was specifically asked not to tell anyone until the investigations were closed, but I don’t have enough information about the terrible case anyway."
A criminal investigation is underway as cops determine the events leading to the Inez’s death. The municipality, which employs the bus driver, has also launched an internal investigation.
