On Friday in Moscow Russian authorities detained 300 Muslims following a crackdown on Islamists extremists by President Vladimir Putin. The 300 Muslims were held in a Mosque while the police entered and seized Islamist literature.

Of the 300 Muslims detained 170 were from foreign countries. President Putin has been worried about radical extremists and has come down hard on Muslim groups. This is the third raid on a house of worship this year, Reuters reports. With the 2014 Winter Olympics being held in Sochi, Russia authorities are taking extra precautions nothing will compromise security at the event.

According to The Inquisitr Putin was attending a meeting of Security force officers when he said the country would continue with the arrests.

"The fight against corruption, crime and the insurgency has to be carried out harshly and consistently," The Inquisitr reports Putin as saying.

The Russian government has grown more concerned about Islamist extremists following an incident in which Russian police killed two member of an Islamists group allegedly planning a terrorist attack for some time this year.

The Inquisitr is reporting that the 300 Muslims arrested in Russia is one step in a more aggressive path Putin has been walking in order to step up security inside and outside of Russia. Earlier this month it was reported that the Russians deployed its Navy to the Mediterranean as a deterrent against anyone in the area that would threaten Russia's national security.

There are no reports on what charges the 300 detained Muslims might be facing.
