A small Michigan town was shocked by news reports confirming that a 3-year-old boy had died after tragically shooting himself in the head. According to Dundee Police, the 3-year-old, Damon Holbrook, picked up a loaded gun that he had found on the floor of a bedroom closet. The gun belonged to a friend of Holbrook's father, who was staying in the Dundee home. The friend, now identified as Joshua Michael Greenhill, had placed the loaded gun on the floor in the bedroom closet after returning to the home after work. Dundee Police Chief David Uhl stated that Holbrook fatally shot himself in the head with a 40 caliber Smith and Wesson which he found loaded in an unlocked plastic case.

Sgt. Tom Redmond told local Fox affiliate WJBK-TV that Greenhill had a pistol license and a clean criminal record. "He was negligent in securing the gun," Redmond told the news station. "He left the portable case on the bedroom closet floor and walked out of the bedroom and into the kitchen. ... Whenever there's kids, you should always unload the weapon."

Greenhill was arrested by the Village of Dundee Police Department and is being held for manslaughter with gross negligence, according to the Detroit Free Press. Greenhill, 30, was arraigned in Monroe County District Court yesterday before Judge Terrence Bronson and charged with a weapons firearm charge: careless discharge causing injury or death. In addition to the prison time, the charge also carries a fine of $2,000.

The Dundee Police immediately responded after receiving a distress call just after the incident occurred at 4:19 pm. By the time police arrived, first responders from the Monroe County Ambulance and Dundee Volunteer Fire Department were already attending to the 3-year-old in the front room of the home on Rawson Street. Holbrook was pronounced dead at 5 pm at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor.

"The thoughts and prayers of the Dundee Police Department are with the family and friends of the victim," Police Chief David Uhl told the Detroit Free Press. Following the tragedy Damon's father took to Facebook stating that despite losing his 3-year-old son yesterday to a gun accident, he still supports the Second Amendment. According to The Blade, Holbrook's father wrote, "Yesterday I lost my 3yrd son to a gun accident. We r all hoping to wake up from this nightmare. ... I have nothing wrong with guns it's with this country was built on. I will still support the Second Amendment," he wrote. "All I ask is that everyone please, please safety first lock it up and put it out of reach of anyone that has no business being around a gun especially kids."
