Authorities in Paris are investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl who was discovered in the washing machine of her family’s apartment, according to prosecutors.
The child's body was found in northeast Paris on Thursday night, and an investigation into the cause of death was launched on Friday, according to the Paris prosecutor's office. The investigation is being run by a special unit for the protection of minors.
She was discovered alive in the washing machine by her father and another family member, but she died unexpectedly in emergency care an hour later, according to a story in the daily Le Parisien newspaper. The prosecutor's office did not provide any additional information or confirm this report.
Despite not being turned on, the washing machine's doors closed on their own, according to the report. The girl's 48-year-old father said that the appliance's door was shut and that it did not turn on by itself.
According to Le Parisien, the girl's parents had just finished dinner when they began to worry about the toddler's whereabouts. They allegedly checked their own flat and asked their neighbors for assistance.
The girl's family discovered her in a severe state at about 10.30 p.m. At 11.30 p.m. She was pronounced dead.
Initial reports indicated that her death was caused by 'choking,' however a source close to the investigation cautioned against drawing conclusions too soon in the investigation.
The parents have five children, including the girl engaged in this terrible occurrence, according to a source who spoke to Le Parisien. They added that the girl's parents were also ignorant of where their other four children were during dinner. "The eldest is 18 years old, then there are the sons between seven and 16 years old, and finally the victim," they stated.
There were no signs of violence and an autopsy will be performed on the girl’s body.
The investigation is ongoing.
