The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo in all its glorious 520 hp might is finally here. To put the widow-makers' 38 years of evolution into perspective, the original 1975 Porsche '930' 911 Turbo, a true legend in its day, only puts out 260 hp.
The dark forces within the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo lie in its explosive 3.8 liter flat-six engine with twin variable-turbine-geometry turbos. Just like in the 2014 GT3, Porsche's new 911 Turbo is mated to a lightning fast, albeit controversial, 7-speed PDK gearbox. Together, the Turbo is capable of spining all four wheels from 0-to-60 in just 3.2 seconds, all the way to a top speed of 196 mph.
The Stuttgart-based automaker is actively conscious about fuel efficiency and performance output as the turbocharged engine will introduce innovative technologies including auto stop/start combined with a trick thermal management system to make the 2014 model the most fuel-efficient 911 Turbo yet. EPA ratings are expected by the end of 2013.
While Porsche Turbos in the past may seem to be all about the engine, the latest model promises new levels of handling thanks to a new all-wheel-drive system that boasts rear-wheel-steering. The Porsche Traction Management AWD system features electronic sensors that are capable of sending even more power to the front wheels than previous generations. Meanwhile, two electro-mechanical actuators replace control links on the rear axles. As a result, 2.8 degrees of rear-wheel-steering enables the Turbo to hide its estimated 3,500 pound weight.
Beyond the trick rear-wheel-steering system, the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo also features enhanced mechanical grip thanks to active aero parts as well as a new track that is 1.1 inches wider than the Carrera 4, which is already 1.7 inches wider than the Carrera 2. A three-stage front spoiler is controlled by a rubber tube that acts as an airbag. Inflation will push against the aero piece, increasing downforce to keep the front end planted on the tarmac. Finally, lightweight 20-inch aluminum wheels are wrapped with a set of super sticky Pirelli P Zero tires.
As brilliant as the new 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo sounds, it pales in comparison to the physic-bending might of the Turbo S. The 'S' designation means a total of 560 hp, enough to rocket from 0-to-60 mph in under 3 seconds. Porsche will electronically limit the Turbo S to a 198 mph top speed. Unchipped, the super-911 will reach 207 mph. Performing an obligatory lap around Nurburgring's infamous Nordschleife race track, the Turbo S finishes the merciless 'north loop' in well under 7 minutes 30 seconds on standard tires.
Porsche power doesn't come cheap -- the standard 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo starts at $149,250. The Porsche 911 Turbo S starts at $182,050.
