Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas once again locked the first row of the grid... but not in the order that you expect. Lewis Hamilton has won at Montreal three times and is the favorite to stand at the top step of the podium on Sunday. However, a late hot lap by Nico Rosberg managed to snatch pole position from Hamilton. Rosberg qualified a blistering 1:14.874s, just edging Hamilton by a mere 0.079 seconds.
"I'm not really aware of Lewis' record or something but of course I know it's a track where he's very strong at, so all the more I'm very, very happy that it worked out," said Nico Rosberg. "It's great. It's been a fantastic day and also all through the weekend really progressing all he time, getting stronger and stronger. It's really cool and best position for tomorrow of course."
“I went wide a couple of times," admitted Hamilton. "In turn six and then turn eight, but Nico did a better job today and I'll just have to try to do better tomorrow. It just wasn't the greatest qualifying session [for me]. Sometimes you have good ones, sometimes you have bad ones, but it's great for the team that we've got the 1-2 in quail.”
“It's not going to be easy, especially with Nico being so fast,” said Hamilton. “Overtaking is going to be very difficult - and overtaking in the same car, especially when they're on the same pace [will be harder still]... I'll do what I can but the main thing tomorrow is to get as many points as I can.”
Next, Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel has been off the pace during practice and have been slower than teammate Daniel Ricciardo as well as the Williams team all weekend. Miraculously, a last minute banzai lap on the last session of qualifying put Vettel into third behind the two Mercedes drivers.
"It's a long race here," said Vettel. "Strategy I think could be a bit of a surprise, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. But as you touched on Williams is very, very strong here. They are very, very quick down the straights. Generally the Mercedes-powered cars are looking forward to the straight lines tomorrow. I'll try to obviously stay as close as I can to those two, maybe get some tow and do the best I can. If we have a chance to attack them then we should go for it.
Bottas and Bottas place fourth and fifth for Williams F1. Vettel's teammate at Red Bull Daniel Ricciardo places sixth at qualifying. Fernando Alonso, Jean-Eric Vergne. Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen Finland complete the 10 ten drivers on the grid.
