A Canadian teenager has been stabbed to death while on a "trip of a lifetime" to the UK to visit a boyfriend she met online.
Ashley Wadsworth had traveled a long way from her home in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada, just to be with her 23-year-old boyfriend, Jack Sepple, who she'd met online.
The 19-year-old had been in the UK for just 11 weeks before she was found dead in Sepple’s bed.
Police said they were called to Sepple’s home in Chelmsford, Essex, after neighbors reported a disturbing skirmish at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Sepple was lying in bed beside Wadsworth’s bloody body when authorities arrived, according to reports.
Wadsworth was pronounced dead at the scene and Sepple was arrested on charges of her murder, police said.
Wadsworth's friends said she had tried to book flights to return home on the night she was killed.
"She was a 19-year-old beautiful soul. She had a ticket for this Thursday to come back home to people whom love her dearly," Ashley’s friend, Larissa Kontos said in an emotional post on Facebook.
"I will miss our conversations, you were always messaging me telling me the newest thing you saw on how a person can get pregnant! I will miss seeing your smile and beautiful face! You will be truly missed by so many. Shine bright girly," she wrote.
Another friend from Canada, Daniel Seaman told a local newspaper that Wadsworth had told him "that she needed help". She had been using a secret social media account to contact her friends, because "her boyfriend didn’t want her to talk with us a lot of the time," Seaman said.
"It seemed like when the going got tough she wanted a change in scenery," Seaman said. "I think the friendships weren’t that deep. She searched the world for connections, and I think that’s how she connected with [her boyfriend]."
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Wadsworth's aunt Shawna Wadsworth said: "She was amazing none of this makes sense and I can’t get any answers. I need to know the truth."
Sepple was remanded into custody and will next appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on Friday.
"We are at the early stages of our investigation and are working to build a picture of what happened," DCI Scott Egerton, said.
