A 17-year-old girl allegedly killed herself under the wrongful assumption that her boyfriend had taken his own life following an argument with her in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India on Friday, June 24.
The teen girl and her 22-year-old boyfriend, the identity of both have been withheld by the authorities, reportedly had a fight after the man demanded that the girl make time for a video call despite her being hesitant.
After their misunderstanding, the boyfriend texted her and claimed that he was going to jump in front of a train and kill himself. Seeing the message, the girl panicked and called him several times. However, when the calls went unanswered, the girl assumed that her boyfriend might have committed suicide. Believing this, the distraught girl decided to take her own life by consuming poison, the Times Of India reported.
The girl was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition for immediate treatment. However, the girl's condition deteriorated at the facility and she subsequently died. Following her death, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the youth under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The boy reportedly worked for the girl's father's business and is currently on the lam.
"I was unaware that my daughter was in touch with someone. While I was out for work, I received a call saying that she had consumed poison. I immediately rushed to the hospital. Doctors tried everything possible but couldn't save her," the victim's father said.
In a similar but unrelated incident, a 20-year-old woman reportedly killed herself at her boyfriend's house after her former partner blocked her on WhatsApp in Dahisar, Mumbai, India on Sunday, May 15, Latin Times reported.
On Sunday night, after 20-year-old Pranali Lokare and her boyfriend attended a friend's wedding together, Lokare allegedly insisted that she wanted to stay at his place. However, he asked her to go home. Even though Lokare went away, she called her boyfriend and again insisted that she wanted to come to his house. The man advised her against doing so, saying that several drug addicts roam the area at night. He then blocked her number on WhatsApp.
Following this, the woman stormed into his house and questioned him why he blocked her on WhatsApp. She then refused to leave his flat the rest of the evening. However, the distraught woman allegedly proceeded to hang herself from the ceiling at her boyfriend's home while he was asleep. When her partner got up in the morning, he found her limp body hanging from a fixture.
Following the incident, the Borivali unit of the Government Railway Police (GRP) registered an accidental death report (ADR) in connection with the incident.
