17 Puppies Dumped Along Indiana Road: All Puppies Found New Homes [VIDEO]

Most stories usually have a happy ending. And -- spoiler alert! -- this is one of those.

It all started on a sad note, when 17 puppies were abandoned on the side of the road in Porter County, Indiana. But Karen Read, a driver passing by late at night, saw a set of eyes glaring at her in the road from the reflection on her headlights. She thought at first it was a raccoon, but when she got a closer look, she saw a mother dog and countless puppies.

Read also said that she saw someone in a gold SUV speed off from the side of the road as she approached the scene.

She thought of the coyotes, raccoons and possums and the danger it would be to leave those puppies on the road, so Karen called her husband to come and help her as she started gathering up the puppies from the road.

Her husband quickly arrived and along with other local residents, started to collect the puppies, who were running off in different directions.

Authorities were called and police arrived and waited until a Porter County Animal Control officer got to the scene and took 15 of the 17 puppies to the animal shelter. The two other puppies were believed to be very ill, so a local resident volunteered to look after them, and returned them two days later when they were doing better.

Karen Read, the local residents and authorities were unable to catch the mother dog as she was too quick for them, but an alert was put out for her, and she was captured in live trap three days later and reunited with the puppies.

Lakeshore PAWS, a local foster organization, has taken the Labrador mix puppies and confirmed they are from two separate litters. They also reported that over 70 applications have been filed to adopt them and they've all been assigned to a family.

Thanks to thoughtful donations, the puppies will be spayed or neutered, and should be with their new families within a week.

As for the mother, she is underweight and wary of new people after the ordeal but is expected to be OK and will eventually be put up for adoption.
