In an attempt to hide her pregnancy, a 16-year-old girl threw her newborn from the toilet window of her apartment.
Police say the incident took place Tuesday, August 3, at a housing society in Virar, Mumbai, India.
According to the police, residents at the housing society found the newborn girl lying unresponsive in a pool of blood in the building’s duct area. The baby girl was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced brought dead.
The police registered a case and initiated an investigation. Officers were dispatched to the crime scene where investigators questioned the residents to obtain a lead.
The officers inspected CCTV footage and windows of all apartments in the building. The teen was arrested after the investigators found bloodstains on a window of one of the apartments.
"We checked all CCTV cameras but we didn’t find anything, so we were sure that it was someone from the society who had committed the crime. While checking the duct area windows, we found bloodstains on the second-floor grille" Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) Abhijeet Tailor of Virar police station told the Mid-Day.
"When we checked the house, we found some bloodstains on the commode and we finally confirmed that the infant was delivered at this flat," the Sub-Inspector explained.
Officers interrogated the occupants of the apartment and narrowed down their suspicion on the teen girl. During the interrogation, the girl confessed to the crime. She told the officers that she was in a relationship with a 25-year-old man.
The girl told police that she got pregnant and feared informing her parents about it. The teen has been charged under section 315 (act done with intent to prevent a child from being born alive or to cause it to die after birth) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The girl's boyfriend was later located and taken into custody for interrogation.
"Later, we took the girl into custody and discovered that she had a boyfriend. We brought him, too, to the police station. During interrogation, the girl finally revealed the truth. She said she had hidden her pregnancy from her parents by wearing loose clothes. We are interrogating her boyfriend," Tailor said.
"We will be registering another FIR on rape charges under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against her boyfriend because the girl is a minor and her consent does not matter," the officer added.
