A giant brown bear has been shot to death after it killed and ate a 16-year-old boy and attacked tourists in a Russian national park.
The bear pinned down a tourist and lunged at another when they went in search of the missing boy.
The deadly incident occurred on Monday, June 21, at the Ergaki National Park in the Sayan Mountains of Siberia.
The teen, who worked as a sherpa at the park, had reportedly taken a different route to get to the tents when the hungry bear attacked him at around 11 a.m on Monday.
About 9 hours later, two tourists left their tents to search for their sherpa and encountered the giant predator.
The bear charged at the tourists and pinned one of them to the ground and lunged at the other. One of them repeatedly stabbed the animal with a pocket knife while he was being attacked.
The men managed to survive the attack and kill the animal. They then rushed back to the camp to alert the park authorities about the brutal attack.
When they came back to the scene with the inspectors at the park, the bear they thought had died was seen lying on the half eaten remains of the boy some 500 yards from the tourist camp.
The staff shot and wounded the animal which immediately fled deep into the woods. The "aggressive" animal was killed the next morning.
"After hours of tracking, the man-eating bear was killed by the park staff," said a statement from the national park.
"The incident happened due to several reasons: firstly, the prolonged cold weather and a large cover of snow do not allow the bears to fully feed, and secondly, the employees of the commercial tent camp decided to straighten the path to the camp, laying it along the fir forest far from official tourist route," according to the director of the park, Igor Gryazin.
The tourist suffered scratches, cuts, and bruises from his fight with the bear. He was treated for his injuries and is currently in stable condition.
