The horrific hate crimes within the Mexico prisons have seen an unprecedented rise in the recent past. The latest happens to be a prison riot, which claimed the lives of 16 inmates and left five wounded. While a further probe is underway, the Tuesday rampage in a Cieneguillas men’s facility has gotten the Zacatecas government to examine the routes via which deadly weapons are being sneaked inside the jail.
Prisons in Mexico are currently overpopulated with fierce drug gangs as per a media outlet. Dropping further insights into the rampage; Zacatecas state security secretary Ismael Camberos Hernandez stated that several victims endured gunshot wounds, while others suffered serious injuries after being stabbed with sharp objects.
Out of the 16 deceased inmates, only one made it to the hospital—where he eventually breathed his last. The others died at the prison. The revolt, which lasted for about two and a half hours saw prisoners fighting with handguns, knives and other unnamed sharp weapons
No police authorities or prison guards, however, were wounded in the riot. A prison has been nabbed in possession of a gun, while three other handguns and knives were found at the site of the crime. It is speculated that the possessions would have made their way into the cells through family relatives who came to visit the prisoners on the last day of the year.
This horrific incident comes a little after the October rampage at a Mexican prison, where six people died as a result of the rampage at the central Mexican state of Morelos. In 2017, approximately 28 inmates were killed as a result of a violent altercation at a prison in the Mexican Pacific resort of Acapulco.
The deadly disaster has pushed authorities to stiffen the safety and security measures—as the Mexican prison cells seem to have been plagued by violence.
The incident, which has been pegged as one of the worst outbreaks of violence spiraled out of control as authorities tried their best to bring things under control. It has been stated that the prison personnel confiscated phones and knives during an inspection of inmates' cells on Sunday.
