A 15-year-old girl has been reported dead after she allegedly overdosed on pills laced with fentanyl at a Los Angeles high school on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
Officers responded to Helen Bernstein High School in the 1300 block of North Wilton Place in Hollywood after being alerted of an overdose at around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
At the scene, law enforcement found an unnamed 15-year-old girl unresponsive on campus grounds after reportedly overdosing on pills laced with fentanyl. Despite life-saving measures, she was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, NBC News reported.
According to Lt. John Radke with the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Bureau Homicide Unit, the deceased girl, along with her friend, had gone to buy Percocet, which is a narcotic for pain, at Lexington Park. After ingesting the pill, the girls started feeling ill almost immediately and lost consciousness.
After the deceased girl's friend did not return home from school on Tuesday evening, her stepfather began driving around in search of her and kept circling back to her school. At around 8 p.m., he found her collapsed in the courtyard of the campus. The girl then told her stepfather that she took half a pill she bought at Lexington Park and told him that her friend was in the women’s restroom, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported.
The stepfather proceeded to contact a school employee and they both entered the restroom where they found the 15-year-old student unresponsive of an apparent overdose. Following this, they called 911 and rendered aid to the girl until paramedics arrived and declared her dead.
"It’s very common for drug dealers to put fentanyl in almost all pills and many other drugs. Fentanyl is a poison and it’s very dangerous to everyone," Lt. Radke added.
The surviving victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. The girl is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
The same night, LAPD detectives discovered that there were at least two other victims of drug overdoses who purchased drugs at the same park. A 17-year-old boy who attends Hollywood High School and another teen victim, both reportedly purchased drugs at the same park and suffered overdoses. The 17-year-old was taken to the hospital from a different location and had to be hospitalized.
