A 13-year-old boy who allegedly drove a stolen car and intentionally struck a cyclist in a fatal crash was recently arrested and booked into a juvenile detention center on multiple charges.
The incident occurred in May 2024. Scott Dwight Habermehl, 63, was cycling to work at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when the teen, along with an 11-year-old boy in the passenger seat and a 15-year-old in the backseat, decided to intentionally crash into Habermehl, according to USA Today.
"Just bump him, brah," the 15-year-old advised, according to a video taken inside the vehicle that was flagged to police in February.
"Yeah, just bump him. Go like... 15, 20," the teen stated when the 13-year-old asked for clarification.
Investigators obtained an arrest warrant to search all three kids' cell phones and allegedly found incriminating videos from the day of the crash. One showed the 11-year-old flashing a handgun and laughing as the vehicle crashed into Habermehl.
The 13-year-old driver was recently arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, leaving the scene of an accident involving great bodily harm or death, and unlawful possession of a handgun by a person.
Law enforcement is still searching for the 15-year-old, who will be given the same charges, and the 11-year-old, who is too young to be charged with murder. Detectives are working with both the district attorney's office and the Children, Youth & Families Department to understand whether he can be charged with a crime.
