An 11-year-old boy has been reported dead after he allegedly fell into a small body of water and was swept into a storm drain during a flash flood in northwest Arkansas on Monday evening, Aug. 29.
The unnamed 11-year-old child was reportedly playing with his friends near a retention pond where stormwater is gathered during heavy rain when things took a tragic turn.
While the boy was with his playmates, he accidentally fell into the water and the current from the ferocious flood waters in Bentonville swept him and pulled him into a storm drain. A 47-year-old woman who witnessed the incident quickly jumped into the water to save the boy and was swept away as well, the New York Post reported.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms were observed in Bentonville on Monday evening, Aug. 29. Approximately 1.5 inches of rain was recorded in just an hour after 5 p.m. at the Rogers Executive Airport, just east of Bentonville.
Following the drowning incident, the Bentonville police and fire departments were called to assist "two people that had been swept into a storm drain by floodwaters" at around 5:30 p.m. Rescue personnel quickly responded to the scene and recovered the 47-year-old woman from the storm drain. She was rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment.
After rescuing the woman, the first responders continued their search for the 11-year-old child. After an extensive search, the child was located deeper in the tunnel. The child was removed from the storm drain and was immediately transported to a local hospital where he ultimately died, NBC News reported.
The incident is currently under investigation. The deadly storm that day reportedly brought damaging winds, heavy rains, and flash flooding up through the Midwest. Two others were also killed during the hurricane.
A 14-year-old girl reportedly died after she was electrocuted by a downed power line in Monroe, Michigan on Monday night, Aug. 29. The girl reportedly thought she was reaching for a stick in her backyard and ended up grabbing a fallen electrical line and got electrocuted.
In another incident, about 30 miles away, a woman was crushed to death in Toledo, Ohio after a tree fell on her during the storm.
