An 11-month-old infant reportedly died drowning while the child was playing in a bathtub with her brother in Harris County, southeastern Texas on Tuesday, June 21.
On Tuesday night, June 21, at around 10:30 p.m., Harris County Sheriff's deputies received a call about a drowned infant and were called to an apartment complex near 15125 West Road in the Copperfield area of northwest Harris County.
When the deputies reached the residence, they found an 11-month-old girl dead in a bathtub. The baby girl was reportedly playing with her brother in the bathtub at the time of the accident. As the tub filled with water and overflowed, the water level became too high for the child, leading to her eventual drowning accident, ABC13 reported.
The deputies immediately performed CPR on the girl and transported her to Memorial Hermann Cypress, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Investigating officers revealed that the child's death is being investigated as an accident. Meanwhile, details regarding how many adults were at home at the time of the incident are currently unclear.
According to data obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are 3,960 fatal unintentional drownings in the United States every year. On average, approximately 11 deaths are reported due to drowning every day. CDC also reports that drowning is the second leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 4.
According to CDC, for every child killed as a result of drowning, eight other children are treated for injuries suffered during a nonfatal drowning. Nonfatal drownings can result in brain damage, long-term disabilities, as well as other serious injuries.
In a similar but unrelated incident, an Indian mother has been accused of mercilessly killing her infant daughter by drowning her in a hospital bathroom sink in West Godavari, Andhra Pradesh because she was unhappy with having a baby girl, Latin Times reported.
The accused, identified as Sitamahalakshmi, reportedly wanted a boy child and was visibly unhappy when she delivered a baby girl. The infant daughter reportedly fell ill and had to be taken to a private hospital in Eluru City by Sitamahalakshmi and her husband Harikrishna on Aug. 8, 2021.
After paying the medical bills, however, Sitamahalakshmi and Harikrishna reportedly looked around the health facility's premises and complained that their child had gone missing. The hospital management and the child's parents searched the center looking for the missing baby and finally located the infant dead in a hospital sink.
The mother was brought in for questioning and detained by police on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021. After the mother was interrogated, she reportedly admitted to authorities that she was unhappy giving birth to a girl child.
“She was hoping to have a son. She murdered the girl as she got angry after seeing her child suffering from illness,” the police officer explained.
