Monroe Isadore a 107-year-old man from Pine Bluff, Arkansas was killed on Saturday afternoon following a shootout with a SWAT team. Isadore's roommate Pauline Lewis called the police after Isadore became angry and hostile. Isadore was killed after a shooting with police that he initiated. Lewis invited Isadore to move into her home at the beginning of August. Lewis told USA Today that the ordeal began after she and her daughter tried to speak with Isadore about finding a new place to live.
Lewis said he then grew angry and pulled out a gun, threatening anyone that came near his bedroom door. "Monroe was in the room and he had the gun and he said 'if you wanna live you better get away from this door,'" Lewis told USA Today. Police responded to a report of aggravated assault after 911 was called. When the SWAT team arrived they used a camera inserted into his bedroom window to confirm that Isadore was in fact armed with a gun.
Police confirmed through various reports that they first tried peaceful measures to get Isadore to surrender. After negotiations proved unsuccessful the SWAT team launched gas canisters into the bedroom. Isadore began to shoot at the SWAT officers who fired back killing the 107-year-old man. Police reports and the Pine Bluff coroner confirmed that Monroe Isadore was 107-years-old. No police were injured in the shootout. An investigation into the incident is under way.
Witness reports of the shooting vary. One witness told USA Today they were unsure of exactly how many shots they heard fired, but knew "It was a lot." Another witness said they heard "at least 30-round fired." USA Today asked Pauline Lewis if she though the actions of the SWAT officers were justified. Lewis responded by saying, "I think they didn't have a choice but to shoot him after they had put the tear gas in and everything, He refused and they shot first. Lewis is currently staying with family while the bullet hole in her home are repaired. Lewis also said Isadore recently purchased the gun for protection.
