Cuban singer Santiago Feliú passed away on Wednesday at the young age of 51 from a heart attack, according to Havana's official media. Feliú was hands down one of the more popular Cuban singers in Latin America and has played with many performers including Silvio Rordiguez, Joan Manuel Serrat, Luis Eduardo Aute, Fito Paez and Pablo Milanes. Rodriguez even took to his blog "Segunda Cita" to write in memory of the deceased singer, sharing that Feliú died of a heart attack.
Feliú's musical career included 11 recorded albums; his last album, "Ay la vida," was released in 2010. Other hit songs by the singer included: "Ansias del alba," "Para Barbara" and "Sin Julieta." The deceased singer is part of the Nueva Trova Cubana, a second generation member, and is known to be "a hippie of communism." During his time, Feliú always took part in social movements--he was a part of the Cuban Revolution and Mexico's Zapatista movement and Colombia's rebel M19 group.
While Feliú was a native of Havana, he spent significant time in Argentina and called the Latin American country his "second home," according to EFE. Local media outlets have reported that the Cuban singer and songwriter suffered from chest pain and died from a heart attack before he could be taken to a hospital for treatment. Born on March 29, 1962, the singer's loss will be felt in the Latin American music scene.
