UPDATE March 28, 2017: Watch Premios Soberano 2017 HERE!
Each year, the Dominican Republic celebrates its artists with an award called Premios Soberano, the biggest recognition that honors the best of local music, TV, radio, theater, classical arts and movies. Hosted by Cheddy García and Irving Alberti, this year the show will have two beauty queens making a special appearance: Former “Nuestra Belleza Latina” winner Francisca Lachapel and the newly crowned Clarissa Molina.
The biggest event in Dominican arts will take place this year at the Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito, which was just reopened to the audience after an extensive remodeling, at 7:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, May 31.
Confirmed to perform are international sensations J Balvin, Gente de Zona, Gilberto Santa Rosa and Nacho from Chino y Nacho. Local acts inlcude Maridalia Hernández, José Alberto “El Canario,” Mozart La Para, Sharlene Taulé, Ilegales, Gabriel and Shadow Blow, among many others.
Meanwhile, CNN en Español anchor Mariela Encarnación and Univision personality Tony Dandrades, both proud Dominicans who are nominated in the “Outstanding Media Personality Abroad” category (Comunicador Destacado en el Extranjero), are coming back to their roots to host the red carpet, which will see national and international acts walk through in their best fashion.
Besides the nominations (which you can see here) in four major categories that are “Popular,” “Media and Communications,” “Cinema” and “Classics,” this year’s show will also feature four special awards: “Soberano Internacional,” “Soberano al Mérito” and “Soberano Especial,” and “Soberano del Público,” in which the audience chooses their ultimate favorite entertainer of the year.
The “Soberano Internacional” will go to Colombian J Balvin and Cuban group Gente de Zona. Balvin has, in recent years, brought the urban genre, specifically reggaeton to new standards, achieving international recognition and being rewarded with Premios Lo Nuestro, Latin Grammy, Latin Billboard and Billboard Awards, Premios Juventud, Latin American Music Awards and an award from MTV Europe. Meanwhile Gente de Zona has positioned themselves as one of the hottest groups in Latin Music with their tropical fusion and catchy rhythms. They have been recipients of Latin Grammy and Latin Billboard Awards.
The “Soberano al Mérito” will be awarded to merengue orchestra The New York Band, who will reunite for the first time in years to perform what everyone is calling already an “unforgettable act.” And last, but not least, the “Soberano Especial” will be awarded to Puerto Rican salsa extraordinaire Gilberto Santa Rosa, who has already won a “Soberano Internacional” in the past.
Premios Soberano is expected to be a huge party like only Dominicans know how to throw, and will be broadcasted live by Telemicro, Channel 5. However, you can watch the show online here (by clicking the link) starting with the Red Carpet at 7:00 PM EDT.
