National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to recognize the contribution of both Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States. The four week celebration is marked with festivities that highlight the food, culture, music and art of Latinos.
Events across the U.S. continue for a month to remember the hard work and dedication of Latinos in America. About 55 million people or 17 percent of the American population are of Hispanic or Latino origin.
Here are some of the major events in some of the big cities like New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
Events in New York:
The El Barrio Latin Jazz festival: This event at P.S. 109 startart on September 15 and continues through September 25. People attending the event can learn more about the Latin music scene in Harlem and its global impact while enjoying live jazz performances.
Room 28, a collective of Hispanic comedic actors, will present an event on September 21 at El Museo Del Barrio to share cultural history of the Latino community through comedy sketches.
Macy’s Herald Square “in concert” on Sept. 27 featuring songwriter Jencarlos Canela.
Events in Los Angeles:
The El Grito de Dolores event: The city of Los Angeles celebrates the Mexican War of Independence with a reenactment of the battle on the steps of City Hall in Downtown LA on September 16.
The Latino LA Festival at the 30-acre Wilmington Water Park on October 1 at 4 p.m. featuring various exhibits and a live performance by Susie Hansen Latin Band.
Latino Heritage LA's piñata making workshop for children on October 29 at Los Angeles Public Library, Central Downtown. The event is aimed at passing down the tradition of Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead).
Hispanicize Event on October 12 that will feature cultural sessions, celebrity speakers and digital influencers. The venue location and the full schedule will be announced shortly here.
Events In Washington, D.C.:
The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., hosts several festivities from September 15 to October 15 for Hispanic Heritage Month. There are Spanish-language guided tours and audio guides.
The Prince George County Hispanic Festival on September 18 at Lane Manor Park in the D.M.V. area.
The Latino Festival – Fiesta D.C. from Sept. 17 to September 18 in Downtown D.C.
