The incredible Aston Martin Vision GT and Nissan Vision GT concepts unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend, and Polyphony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi was present to talk about the future of "Gran Turismo" as well. First, Yamauchi admitted that the 2014 "Gran Turismo 7" release date was a little too optimistic. What's more, Yamauchi also answered a couple questions that reveal what's to come in the next Gran Turismo racing game.
"We are working on the title," Yamauchi told Eurogamer. "I don't think it'll make this year!" The delay is a little frustrating. However, be happy to know that, just like "Gran Turismo 6," "Gran Turismo 7" will forgo the "Prologue" title and head straight into full-title development.
So what should we expect from "Gran Turismo 7" for PS4? Let's begin the discussion by answering the gripes first. The library of Playstation 2-era "standard cars" flaw the visual beauty that Gran Turismo 6 had the potential to deliver. Despite the steadily increasing number of premium cars from monthly updates and DLC packs, including Ayrton Senna's Lotus 97T F1 car and the mighty 2012 Toyota TS030 Hybrid LMP1 racer, Gran Turismo 6 still does not feel like a "true" PS3 title. Unfortunately, the pixelated "standard cars" will continue for the PS4 "Gran Turismo 7" title.
"I doubt that we’ll be throwing away the standard cars," said Yamauchi. "Each car has its own fans. So I think we’ll hang on to the archive. In the meanwhile, some of those cars we may be able to make into premium cars as they become available – but basically we’re more focused on increasing the number of premium cars.”
Secondly, sound engineering in "Gran Turismo 6" has been uninspiring, to say the least, and is another gripe that vexed many "Gran Turismo" fans. Even though Yamauchi confirmed that a sound update will be made for "Gran Turismo 6," most of the improvements will be found in "Gran Turismo 7."
“I think the quality of the sounds in Gran Turismo 6 will be improved," said Kazunori Yamauchi, "but most of the work will be done in Gran Turismo 7."
"Gran Turismo 7" will also push the limits of environment design and engineering as well. According to Yamauchi, the "Gran Turismo" GPS track maker is currently being Beta tested and will be available any time now. "Gran Turismo 6" became the first ever video game to receive FIA certification for the 3D modeling of international race tracks. In fact, the accuracy of the tracks are so incredible that the "Gran Turismo" has announced a special 2015 FIA Online Championship event on "Gran Turismo" will be hosted by the FIA themselves. Kazunori called the FIA certification the biggest accolade "Gran Turismo" had ever received.
“It was not until we completed the tests between our track data and the game’s track data that we fully appreciated the level of work and attention to detail that goes into the development of Gran Turismo 6," said FIA Head of Safety Jacques Berger. "It was not just the tracks that have been precisely mapped out, but also the surrounding landscapes such as the run-off areas, grandstands and buildings.”
Last but not least, photo-mode will be brought to a whole other level in "Gran Turismo 7" thanks to the powerful new PS4 technology. Photography is close to Yamauchi's heart so expect the cars and the detailed environments to deliver the most incredible digitally rendered images we've ever seen.
Stay tuned as we learn more about the latest "Gran Turismo 6" updates and "Gran Turismo 7" news, exclusively for PS4, in the months ahead!
