Each year, Forbes ranks global billionaires by wealth, breaking it down by the richest women, the richest in tech, and even those who’ve dropped off from billionaire status to become mere millionaires. They don’t sort list by ethnicity, but don’t fret, the Latin Times staff combed through the list to give you our own catalog of Latino billionaires.
Top 5
#2 / Carlos Slim / Mexico / $75.2 Billion: Top 5 billionaire since at least 2007, Carlos Slim has risen and fallen on the list with his close rivals Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Slim has been first on the world wealth list more than once, most recently in September of 2014. A graduate of Mexico’s UNAM, he made his fortune in telecommunications. In Mexico, his phone company Telmex enjoyed a near monopoly on services. Forbes reports that his recent surge in wealth is thanks to a $5.6 billion investment in America Movil, a Latin wireless provider.
#4 / Amancio Ortega / Spain / $64.5 Billion: Amancio Ortega didn’t just survive the global financial crisis, he thrived in it, adding $45 billion to his net worth between 2009 to 2014. That’s because Ortega’s main industry -- luxury -- recovered very quickly from the economic collapse. Ortega started his empire with clothing; he’s the mind behind the Zara luxury retail brand, but he’s expanded to related ventures, like real estate in global cities.
Slim and Ortega weren’t the only Latinos to make the billionaire list. In fact, dozens upon dozens of Latinos across the globe have amassed multi-billion dollars fortunes.
