It seems like the Copa América Cenetnario officials just cant get it together with the countries’ national anthems. Specifically, it’s the Chilean one that has given them the most trouble up to now. First off, the confused it with Uruguay’s national anthem and therefore played it before the game on Sunday against Mexico; and second, the moment when they did have to play it, Pitbull’s voice interrupted the solemn theme.
The first embarrassing incident brought officials to issue a statement apologizing for the confusion of anthems and assuring fans it would not happen again. “This evening during the pre-match ceremony, due to human error, we inadvertently played the wrong National Anthem. We sincerely apologize to the Uruguayan Federation, the Uruguay National Team, the people of Uruguay and to the fans for this mistake. We will work with all parties involved to ensure such an error does not occur again.”
Except it did… Less than 24 hours later, even though they did play the right Anthems for each team (Argentina and Chile), when the Chilean Anthem began, the players started to sing, Pitbull’s voice came on forcing the solemn tune to come to an end, but despite the awkward mistake, fans and players did not let this stop them from finishing the Anthem, so they continued to sing with Pitbull's voice in the background.
Needless to say, this did not play well with the fans, and their reactions were priceless. “National anthem snafu #2 at #CopaAmerica: cutting Chile's anthem short. They did play the whole thing for #MEXvURU so it's all good,” said @cesicruz. Or “Had no idea the @LaRoja National Anthem traditionally featured Pitbull. @CA2016 get your act together !! #CopaAmerica #ARGvsCHI #Copa100,” wrote @durgapaln.
Hopefully these two mistakes were enough for Copa officials and nothing will go wrong anthem-wise tonight at the USA vs. Costa Rica or Colombia Paraguay games.
