The mayor of Bogotá, Gustavo Petro, was dismissed from his position by the Attorney General of Colombia, who banned him from any executive power for 15 years following his disastrous management of the city's waste disposal. While no criminal charges have been made, the heavy sanctions reflect Petro's poor administrative decision-making in causing serious damages to the city by enacting changes to the metropolis' waste collection system which proved disasterous.
"The Attorney General's office imposed as a sanction his removal from office and barred him from general executive positions for 15 years," said Attorney General Alejandro Ordóñez. "The fortune of Bogotá Humana depends only on popular mobilization, I hope it is peaceful," said Petro on his Twitter account. Petro, an ex-militant of 53, was supposed to govern the city until 2016. His removal has come as a shock to many but as a relief to more following the city's waste troubles.
The Mayor's problems ensued following changes he made a year ago in which Bogota's waste collection system was privatized. The Attorney General's office suggested that the damage caused to the city went against the constitutional principles of free enterprise and competition.
