On Wednesday April 15, 2015, Aaron Hernandez, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the late-night shooting of a man near his home. The former New England Patriots star was also convicted of gun charges in the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating Hernandez’ fiancée’s sister. The man was shot six times, and his body was found in a Massachusetts industrial park.
Lloyd, who was working for a landscaping firm at the time of his killing, played football for the Boston Bandits, the oldest semi-pro team in Boston, and the winner of four championships in the New England Football League.
Prosecutors presented evidence that Hernandez was with Lloyd at the time he was killed, these included a home security video from the former NFL player's house, witness testimony and cellphone record that indicated Lloyd's movements on the night of the murder.
Hernandez faces further legal trouble. Prosecutors have suggested Lloyd may have been killed because he knew too much about Hernandez's alleged involvement in a deadly 2012 drive-by shooting in Boston. Evidence collected during the case, led to two more murder charges against Hernandez. He is accused of shooting two men over a spilled drink at a nightclub.
Today's verdict carries a sentence of life without parole. Hernandez was an All-American out of the University of Florida who was drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round in 2010. He had a $40 million contract.
