Netflix releases first trailer of Ayrton Senna mini-series 30 years after his tragic death

SEATTLE - Netflix released on Tuesday the first trailer of their anticipated mini-series on Ayrton Senna one day before the 30th anniversary of the passing of legendary Formula 1 driver and three-time world champion. The teaser is centered around one of Senna's best moments in a Formula 1 circuit: the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix, his first victory in home soil.

The release date for the Ayrton Senna mini-series is yet to be announced, but it's more than likely Formula 1 fans will have to wait until mid-to-late 2024 to see one of the most beloved drivers in auto racing history on the streaming platform.

The official teaser was released one day before the anniversary of Senna's fatal crash, which ended up costing him his life during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Senna's life always involved a steering wheel. At the age of 13 he began racing karts and by the age of 21 he had become a professional. He joined Formula 1 in 1984 and spent 10 season in racing's highest ranks, where he won three world championships including two in a row between 1990-91.

From the moment he entered the league, Senna asserted himself as one of the fastest and respected drivers in the circuit. Between 1985 and 1991, no one was faster than Ayrton Senna. He led Formula 1 in pole positions in six of those years, including four straight between 1988-91. He finished his career with a total of 65 poles, a record that would stand for 12 years until German driver Michel Schumacher broke it in 2006.

The former Lotus, McLaren and Renault driver won 41 races in his career, but probably the sweetest for him came at the Brazilian Grand Prix, a race he won twice (1991, 1993).

Senna still holds a good amount of Formula 1 records. One that stands out is his record six wins at one of the most renowned circuits in the world, the Monaco GP. They came in a span of seven years, between 1987 and 1993, the only time he missed on first place being in 1988, when rival and former teammate Alain Prost took pole.

In his 10 seasons in Formula 1, Senna never finished below fourth place in the driver's championship, winning three times, finishing second twice and third just once. He is one of just 13 drivers in Formula 1 history to win consecutive driver's championships.

The cast for the show was announced in October 2023, with Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone portraying the three-time world champion. Leone has previous experience in playing someone like Senna, as he portrayed Spanish driver Alfonso de Portago in the film Ferrari, which followed the Italian manufacturer's attempt at winning the 1957 Mille Miglia race.

The six-episode series will try to embody the journey of one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history up until the tragic moment he died after a crash during the 1994 San Marino Gran Prix.
