Latino actor and entrepreneur Wilmer Valderrama, along with African American comedian Cedric the Entertainer, presented today the nominations for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards. This year's ceremony, set to be held on January 7 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills and broadcast on CBS and on Paramount +, marks a significant chapter in the history of the prestigious awards.

Pedro Pascal and Selena Gomez lead the small Latino group of nominees. The Chilean actor was nominated in the Best Television Male Actor – Drama Series, while Gomez received a nod for her performance in her series "Only Murders in the Building."

The Spanish movie "La sociedad de la nieve" was nominated in the Foreign Movie category.

"Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" led the nominations with nine and eight, respectively.

"Succession" is the most nominated TV series with nine, followed by "The Bear" and "Only Murders in the Building" with five each.

The nominations announced on CBSNews.com/GoldenGlobes, beginning at 5 a.m. PT/8 a.m. ET, and mark a new era for the Golden Globes following their acquisition by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association earlier this summer.

The organization introduced a fresh membership board of directors and tasked them with selecting, ratifying, and accrediting journalists as Golden Globes voting members. Around 27% of the new group of voters are Latino critics and film journalists. This change comes as part of sweeping reforms aimed at addressing past criticisms and enhancing the credibility and inclusivity of the awards.

The new Golden Globes

Adding to the excitement are two new categories: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures, and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

This year's Golden Globes also signify a return to television prominence after a tumultuous period. The awards had faced boycotts and scandals, leading to a television hiatus in 2022 after revelations about the lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

CBS's hosting of the event, something that is happening for the first time in over four decades, marks a pivotal moment in the award show's history. The network's president and CEO, George Cheeks, has emphasized that the Globes add an "exciting new dimension" to CBS's schedule, underlining the significance of live entertainment and sports to the network.

Who is the host of the Golden Globes?

While the nominations are out, the 2024 Golden Globes ceremony still finds itself without a host. Despite efforts to secure a high-profile host, CNN reported that notable figures such as Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and the comedic trio of Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes have all declined the offer.

Similarly, Ali Wong, known for her performance in the Netflix series "Beef," has turned down the opportunity. While no specific reasons have been publicly disclosed for these declines, it's clear that the search for a Golden Globes host is facing challenges. Sources indicate that "three very serious conversations" with other potential hosts are in progress, suggesting that the hunt is still very much alive, but the clock is ticking as the January 7 ceremony date approaches.
